General PTO Meeting Minutes - Monday, November 4, 2019
In Attendance: Kate Gookin, Chris Asmussen, Shanda Carrithers, Doreen Thomas, Scott Skowronek, Rhea Kowitz, Pamela Ornstein, Jessica Rosas, Beth Formanek, Danita Shumard Unable to Attend: Bert te Velde, Cayce Petersen, Noelle Fox
Call to Order / Introductions
Motion to Approve Minutes – Rhea approved; seconded by Shanda
Old Business/Updates:
Mr. A, Principal
Still a “B” school - putting a team together to strategize; Scott asked the biggest hurdle and Mr. A said growth; possible reasons is six different middle schools; Rhea added she notices a big gap in effort and ability; Scott asked if we can reach down to the elementary schools; Ms. Formanek added it could be the culture shock of one teacher to six teachers; Rhea added she noticed kids are very tired; Mr. A did note that we are preparing kids well for high school, so that is a win

Preparing for book fair
Pennies for patients; helped four families last year by raising $2k
Dance did well; raised about $1100 after expenses

Book Fair, Scholastic – 11/12-15; Stugo helped with banners/advertisement; many posters up and announcements out; donating $10 to each grade and teacher through PAWS
Book Fair, Barnes & Noble – Sunday, 12/15 10a-10p – both Shea and Tempe Mktplc locations; Choir teacher will do a performance (not sure which location); Strings will also perform (not sure which location); cheerleaders will be there in the parking lot handing out flyers; wrapping is happening at Tempe Mktplc (Stugo, College and Career Readiness, NJHS will each take a shift); sliding scale and can split into giftcards; need a sign for wrapping table; doing a signup genius
Auction Committee Meetings:
TALENT SHOW / AUCTION – Tuesday, December 3 @ 6pm
Kate has sent out over 500 letters for donations; they are beginning to roll in
29 days until the auction
Need help with data entry; baskets; taking pictures
Food – Papa Johns offered to set up a table and sell pizza, or people can pre-order
Mr. A asked Kate to talk with her about setup

Dad’s Club
First meeting two weeks ago; discussed a couple things; FB page is Mohave Middle School Dad’s Club; Arvizu’s designing a logo; talked about school safety; Mr. A got them yellow vests to help with traffic; handing out flyers to parents who are doing it right; they will have a coupon for the dance or snack bar; some flyers will say ‘please do better…’
Also talked about a kickball tournament/bbq and movie night
Scottsdale Parent Council (Shanda/Abby) – next meeting is 11/13; topic is differentiated learning; any agenda items need to be submitted by 11/8; bullying was brought up and Mohave is recognized as doing a good job
Spirit Store – open until 11/17

Treasurer’s Report
Deposits: $1529.63 (all donations)
Withdrawals: $10 (Renewal of our Arizona Corporate Commission)
Ending Balance as of 10/31/19 was $14,314.25
Outstanding debts and expenses:
A check to Scott Skowronek is due in the amount of 102.48 for purchasing teacher snacks during the 10/23 half day.
There are 2 outstanding receipts for a chili cook-off totaling about $60.
Reminder that it is important to have prior approval for purchases. It helps in tracking and provides for more open communication.
Dine Outs/ Fundraising (Scott)
Dec. 20 - Star Wars – Scott reached out Harkins; getting an override to have a fundraiser on opening night; need to sell tickets at Mohave; Molly will create tickets
Papa John’s – another one coming up; no report on last one yet
Art to Remember (Rhea) – Was awesome! Hoping to have them all returned to Rhea by Friday so art can be mailed back to the company; next week individualized flyers going home with artwork on them; artwork shipped here; will need committee to organize
