In the 2012-2013 school year, Mandarin Chinese will be the third year to offer to Mohave Middle School students. Students will have opportunity to take one semester exploratory class or one year long high school credit Mandarin I class.  Mohave is one of only three middle schools in the district to have this wonderful opportunity!

Why study Chinese? Well, why not?

Reason #1: With 1.3 billion people, China is the world's most populous. Chinese is the language of nearly 1/4 of the world's population.

Reason #2: China currently boasts the fastest growing economy in the world and is set to become the world's next superpower.

Reason #3: China is one of America's largest trading partners. Many U.S. companies do business in China, and so being able to speak and understand the Chinese language will give you a competitive edge.

Reason #4: Chinese has been named the number one critical language of both the U.S. Department of State and Department of Defense.

Reason #5: China is one of the world's oldest civilizations, over 5000 years old. Learning the language is the key to explore and appreciate the cumulative knowledge and experience of one of the world's most exquisite cultures.

Reason #6: Traditional Chinese culture, from Confucianism and Chan Buddhism to martial arts and Chinese cuisine, has an enormous influence on the East and the Southeast Asian nations, and indeed the entire world!

Mohave Musicians are Doing Great Things...
We would like to recognize the hard work and fine performances of the Mohave Middle School Orchestra, Band, and Choir in the National Competition in California with Music In The Parks Festivals.  This took place  Saturday, April 27th, 2012 near Anaheim California.  The groups all placed well in their categories and received these awards at the California Adventures Hyperion Theater that same evening:

1.      Choir placed 2nd with an Excellent Rating

2.      Band placed 2nd with a Good Rating

3.      Concert Orchestra placed 1st with a Superior Rating

4.      Chamber Orchestra placed 1st with a Superior Rating

5.      Concert Orchestra won the Best Overall Awards for receiving the highest score of all of the orchestras participating.

This would not have happened without the leadership and direction of our fantastic music teachers Pam Turner, Bonnie York, Mary Wagner, and Jamie Franks.  We thank them for going above and beyond with our students!
This would not have been possible without the talent and dedication of our wonderful students and their devoted families and parents, who spend many hours practicing and perfecting their art.  Congratulations and "Bravo!"
A special thank you also goes out to the professional clinicians who worked with the Mohave Orchestra members this past Spring to help prepare them for their concerts and competitions:

  • Mr. Lew Felton- conductor of the Mesa Metropolitan Orchestra and veteran strings teacher in Mesa.
  • Ms. Beth Gilbert- conductor, teacher (retired) of Kino JHS in Mesa.  Had one of the best JHS programs in the state.  Won state and national awards.  Served on the National ASTA (American String Teachers Association)
  • Mrs. Jamie Kellogg- professional cellist- Mrs. Sandra Holmes- professional violinist
  • Mr. John Ebinger- professional bassist (member of Phoenix Symphony)
  • Mrs. Patricia Cosand- professional violinist/violist- Teaches at Arizona State University

WAY TO GO LADY CATS!

The Mohave Spirit Line competed at the 2012 State Pom & Cheer Championship on Friday, March 2nd.  Last year the girls brought home 10th in state.  This year our girls were amazing and placed 4th in state!!  We are so proud of these girls.  They have cheered at all Mohave sports and competed in two competitions this year.  Spirit line is a full year commitment and these girls worked very hard for this accomplishment!  Congratulations Lady Cats!!
(& congrats to Julie Brock for coaching and leadership!)
